Roma children also need organized informal everyday activities in their home environment

Tina Cigler, Association for Developing Voluntary Work Novo Mesto, Slovenia

While the majority of children attend various afterschool activities, Roma children return from school to their discouraging home environments. Our day centres for Roma children, based in Roma settlements, offer individual activities focusing on schoolwork, and group activities focusing on mastering social and cultural skills. In a Roma settlement without pre-school education options, we developed a programme following the curriculum for kindergartens. I will present the results, outcomes and the impact of the programme.
